Tutorial on how to write an outstanding dissertation introduction

Dissertation is a long essay, which is focused on one particular subject. It is usually written for a university degree or diploma.

Introduction is usually very frustrating. Initially it is one of the reasons why you can’t continue doing the rest of your research. It is the first paragraph of your research paper and the first thing that the people would read. It is important for the writer not to ignore the introduction, as it would make it difficult for the audience to understand what the writer is trying to communicate with them. A speck of an idea should be given to the audience so that they can follow it up when they go through your paper.

Here are some helpful guidelines you will find handy in writing an introduction:

Tips you should follow to write the perfect Introduction

This is the most important part. Here is where the process of describing what you plan on studying and describing begins. Use a logical sequence, not a haphazard one. This will help you in seeing which aspect needs to be highlighted more prominently. This will lead to further improvement about connections, implications, relevance and may even give you more ideas to research on.

Your introduction is the part that the dissertation committee would have a high attention to. This is because the introduction is that part which establishes the interest in the reader. Some often suggest that the writers should write the introduction at the end because then they will have a clear idea about their dissertation. However, writing it at the beginning will help you in lining your information an organized manner and in a simpler language rather than using complicated terms.

Follow this path for constructing the perfect introduction:

  • Put your information or argument in a concise context
  • Make a list of questions and make yourself answer them, such as: Why should I do this research? What are the aims and objectives of my study?
  • State the dissertation’s main idea, concept, and objective.
  • Your introduction should be a concise summary about the entire research for your reader.
  • Explain to the reader why they should be interested in reading further.
  • Do not write any historical information in the introduction
  • Use a simple language. Avoid using jargons.
  • Don’t over crowd your introduction with citations.
